My Myrtle Beach Vacation Shutterfly Book

My family and I recently took a trip to Myrtle Beach. We got a 'free gift' from the OceanWatch Villas at Grand Dunes for staying there. It was a free 8x8 photo book from Shutterfly. I've used this website many a time in the past to order books and prints and calendars, etc. The products are of good quality and good price, especially if you sign-up for an account and receive e-mails with deals in them. So anyway, I was pretty excited to make my book from vacation. I always take the 'customization' route. It takes A LOT longer, but it's always worth it to me to see the book and love everything about it. Check out the book I made (Just click on the pictures to make them larger):

In the end, I still spent $17.22. I even added a memorabilia pocket in the front to put tickets in. Here's the breakdown:
Hard photo cover=$10
20-page 8x8 book=$19.99
additional pages (6)=$6
7x7 clear memorabilia pocket=$1.99
Subtotal=$37.98
Shipping=$7.99
Discount=-$29.99
Tax=$1.24
Total=$17.22

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: OceanWatch Villas at Grand Dunes

Dates Visited: November 3rd-10th, 2013

I just want to start off by saying that if you want to be able to look over the ocean from your room, don't stay here unless you're an owner. We have a different timeshare and we traded to stay here. We knew that we would probably end up staying in one of the back buildings since we weren't owners which wasn't a big deal. What is a big deal to me is when people lie to my face. The woman said that they were completely booked up in the buildings by the beach. We stayed here in the first week of November. It's the off-season. There was nobody there. I have a problem with people that lie to me so we probably won't stay here again. That's some pretty terrible customer service. That being said, pretty much everything else about this place is great.

The villas are very nice. When you first walk in, there's a kitchen to your right and a small hallway to your left. The kitchen is very nice. It has a full-sized fridge and an oven/stove top. The microwave is above the stove top. In the peninsula, there is a sink and a dishwasher. They provide dishwashing detergent. They also provide pretty much everything that you need with a fully equipped kitchen like plates, glasses, and utensils. There's a coffee pot and a toaster. Across from the kitchen in the small hallway, you will find a closet. That's where the washer and dryer are. Make sure you check the water before you start a load of laundry. Ours had the hoses switched and the cold water was actually hot. Then is the door to the bathroom. It's a very spacious bathroom. It has a toilet, sink, and bathtub/shower combo. In the shower, there is a retractable clothes line. It's a good place to dry your swimsuits. There's a door from that bathroom into the bedroom with 2 queen beds. It is very spacious. There's 1 closet and a dresser with a TV on top. Between the 2 beds, there is a nightstand that allows for some additional storage. There are also 2 more small nightstands on the other sides of the bed. There's also a door that leads to the living room. On the other side of the kitchen is a nice-sized dining room table. It has 4 chairs and a bench. If the people are medium-small, you can EASILY fit 3 on the bench. There's also a dresser looking thing with a mirror above it in the 'hallway' from the kitchen to the dining room. The living room has a couch, 2 chairs, a coffee table, 2 side tables, and a TV. There's a blu-ray player under the TV. The balcony is right off the living room. It's a good size and has a table with 4 chairs. Ours overlooked a pond with a fountain in it.

The entrance to the master bedroom is at the back of the villa. It has a chair, a king bed, and a large dresser with a TV on top. There are 2 nightstands that have quite a bit of storage in them. Then there's also another dresser on your way into the bathroom. When you first walk in, there's a double vanity on your left and a HUGE soaker tub on your right. You will find another retractable clothes line above the tub. There's a door that holds the toilet and a glass shower.

They keep all of their pools at around 85 degrees. While we were there, the weather outside was in the upper 60s and lower 70s. With the ocean breezes, it's even cooler. We went to the pools near the ocean and they were very nice. However, if you got out of the water, you pretty much turned into an ice cube. The lower one was cool with the waterfall though.

The kids' pool by the back buildings is a much better option in the cooler months because you can't feel the breeze. There is a nice splash zone for the kids. It has a bunch of things that will dump water on you. Even my 3-year-old enjoyed it. Don't let that little area fool you though. It's a very large pool. There are plenty of deeper sections for adults to swim in. There's even a waterslide. As long as someone was there to catch him at the bottom, even my son was able to go down the slide by himself.

The indoor pool is nothing special, but it is nice that they have that if the weather is just terrible. All the pools are open 6am-10pm.

The hotel hosts different activities. You will receive a paper with all the times and activities on it when you first check-in. Some things are free and some things cost money. They had build-your-own sundaes for $4, tye-dye t-shirts for $15, shell class, and Bingo for $2/board to name just a few. They have some cute little prizes for BINGO winners. We won an insulated reusable tote and a voucher for an order of nachos from the MarketPlace. They also have sports for kids in different age groups every morning. The sport changes everyday including basketball, soccer, and t-ball.

The MarketPlace is like a small convenience store. They have a couple frozen items, boxed food items (crackers, pop-tarts, etc.), and a couple toiletries. They also have some fresh fruit. In the MarketPlace is where the Starbucks and Pizza Hut Express are located. You can get here from the pool or the ground level by the parking garage.

There is a small pond on the far end of the kids' pool. At this pond, they have 3 machines that for 25 cents, dispenses fish food. There is one on the bridge from the kids' pool to the serenity pool area. There are two more dispensers on the mini pier that juts into the pond that you can stand on. The money is donated to the children's miracle foundation (I think). The fish get so excited that they come up to where you are whenever they feel the vibrations of you walking. They pretty much attack the food when you throw it into the water. They looked like koi, mostly small, but a couple pretty large ones. There's also an area with a pergola that overlooks the pond that has rocking chairs. It's very peaceful. I guarantee there are many people that stay at this resort without ever discovering this place exists.

The treehouse is simply AWESOME. It's 3 stories tall. It has a slide that comes down from the top level. There's a fireman's pole, a steering wheel, lookout goggles, and about 10 different ways to get from the ground to the inside of the treehouse. I saw kids as young as 2 to kids as old as high school playing there. That's not including the adults that were with their children that looked like they were having a blast.

I definitely suggest going down to the beach at least one morning when it's not cloudy to see the sunrise. It's beautiful. There are a surprisingly large number of people that come out for the sunrise whether they're watching it or just running along the beach.

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: Carolina Roadhouse

Date Visited: November 9th, 2013

The ambiance leaves something to be desired. I wasn't expecting anything too amazing, but for a restaurant, I didn't expect it to seem like a bar. It was so dark in there, I could barely read my menu. The music was so loud, our table barely talked the entire night and when we did, we were practically yelling at each other. Other than that though, our waiter was incredibly attentive. I had the marinated steak and it was AMAZING!! 99% of the time, I want my steak covered in steak sauce when I eat it, but this time I passed. There was so much flavor going on in this steak. I loved it. My meal cost about $20 and included a salad and some seriously awesome garlic mashed potatoes. It was definitely a successful dinner in my opinion.

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: 2nd Ave Pier

Date Visited: November 9th, 2013

We paid our $1/person (we didn't have to pay for the 3-year-old in our group) and walked down the pier. The views are amazing and at sunset, we still saw a very nice pink sky toward the southwest. When you look in the other direction, you can see the Myrtle Beach shoreline all lit up including the SkyWheel. It's pretty relaxing and very nice looking. There were a lot of people fishing though (which if you're not a huge fan of dead fish, might turn you off a bit). We were planning on eating at the restaurant here, but they were hosting a wedding reception so the restaurant was closed.

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: Alligator Adventure

Date Visited: November 9th, 2013

When we got there, we were greeted by quite a few turtles out front. When you buy a ticket, the woman tells you that you can get a 2nd day for free on your way out if you want which is nice since tickets are $19.99/person. There are TONS of alligators (as there should be). There are small ones, big ones, HUGE ones, white ones, Asian ones, etc. They also have a bunch of other animals including bats, lemurs, a snake house, crocodiles, and a whole bunch of other animals. They even had kangaroos and wolves while we were there. Plus, there were tons of turtles (most of them in other exhibits with the alligators and crocodiles, it seemed). There were also cages with birds randomly placed around which includes kookaburras, owls, and multiple other types. A little while after we got there, there was a lemur feeding. We started to watch, but there wasn't a lot of room to see and the windows were pretty fogged up so even if you did have a prime place up front, you wouldn't be able to see perfectly so we left about 5 minutes in. My favorite part of our visit was the alligator show. I think they do this during the colder months instead of the alligator feedings, since alligators don't eat during the cold months (I think). They had a bunch of baby alligators and the guy that did the show caught one, wrapped it's mouth (so that it couldn't bite him or anyone else), and then told us all about alligators. He also brought the alligator out so that everyone could touch it if they wanted to. Be warned though, you can only touch the alligator if you're sitting in the first 2 rows. He even came around a second time to let people touch the alligator again.
Then, after he was done with his 'presentation', he waited around so that anyone that wanted to could come up, touch the alligator, take some pictures, and ask questions. You could easily spend all day there or you could power through it like we did and see almost everything in about 2 hours. Then, they have a very nice gift shop that you can visit on your way out. Overall, a great place to visit.

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: Captain George's Seafood Buffet

Date Visited: November 8th, 2013

I'm not usually a huge fan of seafood, but it was nice being able to try new things. Everyone else in my party loves seafood. There were plenty of things for people to eat that don't like seafood including a whole section for desserts. There were a lot of options. Everything I ate was very good. It was a little on the pricey side ($31/person), but that's about on par with the rest of the buffets around town that include crab legs (which everyone at our table really seemed to enjoy). The buffet was made to look like large ships. Our son really seemed to enjoy that. Our server was very nice and attentive.

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: Ripley's Aquarium

Date Visited: November 8th, 2013

This place isn't cheap, but it's very entertaining. The exhibits are nice and very educational. My 3-year-old got to touch horseshoe crabs and a small shark. There were hand sanitizer stations which was nice.

The moving sidewalk was pretty cool. It seemed like there were a TON of sharks in the tank. It was very interesting.

At the top of the stingray tank, there is 'Friendship Bay' where you can touch the stingrays if they come up to you.

They have a kids area where they can play. There is a massive light bright wall, a Lego table, a train table, some seahorses, a slide with a massive turtle on top, and even a little rock climbing wall with some padding below. We went to the feeding at the stingray tank. It was pretty cool. A man talked while there was a girl in SCUBA gear feeding the stingrays. She was very comical. People were very respectful during this show and just sat on the ground instead of standing so that only the people in the front row could see. That was nice.

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: Pirates Voyage

Date Visited: November 7th, 2013

The night we went was the first night of the Christmas special. The preshow was alright. You apparently need to show up at least 1 ½ hours before the show. We didn't realize that. We thought you only needed to be there 1 hour ahead. I think I can honestly say that there are no bad seats. If there was such a thing, we would have had them. We were all the way to one side in the last row and we could still see almost everything. Our waiter was very attentive. The show was great and my 3-year-old really seemed to love it. He enjoyed yelling and clapping and participating. He doesn't eat much so he was able to just sit on our laps and eat off our plates (which means we didn't have to pay for him). The menu included Voyager Creamy Vegetable Soup, Buccaneer Bread, Half O' Roasted Cackler (chicken), Captain's BBQ Pork Cob O' Buttery Corn, Pirate Ship Taters, and Apple O' Me Eye Pie. Everything was so delicious! And if you don't finish everything, you can take it home in a doggie bag. We all thoroughly enjoyed the show. The Christmas show was themed around the Christmas carol storyline. It was alright.

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: Captain Hook's Adventure Golf

Date Visited: November 7th, 2013

We did the Lost Boys course because Hook's was closed due to construction (which was too bad because on Hook's, there's a hole on Hook's ship).

The holes were pretty easy, but not TOO easy since we're not very good, but our 3-year-old still had fun.

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: Flamingo Grill

Date Visited: November 5th, 2013 (our anniversary)

The ambiance is kind of hard to explain. It's like a classed up diner. Our waiter was very attentive. We started out with an appetizer of fried lobster bits (it was the special). They were delicious. Plus, you could tell that they were freshly made. I appreciate that when I go to a restaurant. For dinner, I got the 6 oz filet mignon and a crabcake. My meal came with a salad, peas, and garlic mashed potatoes. The potatoes were seriously tasty. They were very creamy, but nice and thick with some skins mixed in there too. My filet was cooked perfectly. It was very tender. My crabcake was cooked perfectly as well. It was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was very full of crab.

I had a bight of my husband's food. It was pretty delicious as well. He had salmon oscar (which means it's topped with lump crab meat, asparagus, and Bearnaise sauce).

We had told our waiter that it was our anniversary and at the end of our meal, he brought us out a little ice cream sundae. It was nice.

Oh yeah, we also ordered some martinis. I got a sour apple martini and my husband got a pomegranate martini.

Needless to say, after dinner, we were both completely stuffed! Our total was around $80.

Myrtle Beach Vacation 2013: SkyWheel

Date Visited: November 5th, 2013

It costs $13/person. There is a coupon in one of the coupon books for $1 off per ticket. The 'gondolas' are nice. You could easily fit 6 people in there. They're even air conditioned. You go around 4 times. It's nothing overly amazing, but it's something that you should definitely do at least once. You do get some pretty awesome views.

The only downside is when they're loading people onto the SkyWheel on your first trip around and they keep stopping it. When you're at the top, you sway a little and that really freaked my husband out.
